We’ll be reading debut novels as well as some other other debut collections (essays, short stories) covering wide-ranging themes to discuss what resonated for us, what worked and what didn’t, and what may help the author to fuel a more prolific writing career moving forward. I’ve always thought that first novels really came from the heart or are otherwise distinctive, and thought it would be fun to discuss with fellow readers this stage in writers’ literary careers. Ideally we’ll focus on new works, but we’ll also look at some other other writers’ debuts if there’s consensus among the group about about what to read. A lot of the books will be by authors you haven’t yet heard of but hopefully will soon hear much more from, and others will be by authors we love and admire, but perhaps we’ve read their their more famous, acclaimed books and not their debut. (Or maybe you have and we can discuss it again!) I’m hoping for the group age-wise to be 20s to 40s (ish) and to keep this group a fairly low-key and fun discussion that we can all get something out of while making some new friends along the way (with potential other social events to supplement monthly discussions of the books). Whether you’re just looking to meet to discuss literature over coffee or drinks and snacks throughout the West Side (Culver City, Palms, Mar Vista, Santa Monica, Venice, Westwood) or you’re a writer and looking for guidance in writers who just published their first pieces, you’re more than welcome to join and I look forward to meeting you!
