Machine Learning for Heart Surgery
Heart failure affects over 40 million people globally and accounts for 1-2% of the total healthcare spend. Yet, some treatments, such as Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, have non responder rates of between 30-50%. In this talk I will introduce the Siemens GuideCRT prototype and discuss how machine learning can play an important role in planning and guiding the delivery of cardiac therapy. I will address some of the challenges of using deep learning with limited data and when ground truth data is not available and show how we are using imitation learning to help doctors perform challenging tasks in stressful situations. https://www.healthcare.siemens.co.uk.

Dr Peter Mountney is a Program Manager and Senior Key Expert Scientist at Siemens Healthineers. His research interests lie in the fields of machine learning, medical imaging and quantum technologies. His research focuses on developing deep technology and translating it into applications. Peter carried out his PhD and post-doctoral work at Imperial College London.

Much like DNA, the central nervous system (CNS) is as much of an issue of big data as it is biology. The CNS sends data to our organs and limbs constantly, hence there lies potential in its malleability. If we can apply machine learning to understand what these signals mean and develop interventions to treat chronic conditions that result as a fault of the nervous system, we have the potential to revolutionise medicine and change millions of lives. Cambridge Bio-Augmentation Systems (CBAS) will discuss their current work on the largest nervous system dataset in the world, what insights they have gained, and the future of medicine and AI. https://cbas.global.

Oliver Armitage is cofounder and Chief Scientific Officer at Cambridge Bio-Augmentation Systems. Oliver has always had a vision that the human body could be repaired or made better through augmentative technology and how that can be used to improve people’s lives. He studied for his PhD at the University of Cambridge in Bioengineering, working in the world-renowned Nanoscience Centre. CBAS has the largest neural dataset in the world and is currently running cutting edge research on applying AI to the nervous system for read and write applications. CBAS was named one of the top startups at Y Combinator’s Winter ‘17 cohort by TechCrunch and won the top prize with accelerator MassChallenge UK 2015. Oliver was recently named to Forbes 30 Under 30 2018.

8:00pm - Using Tensor Networks for Drug Discovery (change in speaker)
Drug discovery is an expensive and time-consuming process. Currently, bringing a new drug to market costs billions of dollars and takes between ten and fifteen years, and the numbers are only getting worse. One of the many things making the endeavour so challenging is the fact that the space of drug-like molecules is intractably large: one estimate puts it at O(10^60). Recent research investigating the potential for deep generative and predictive models as a means of tackling this problem has shown promising results, and GTN are building a platform that puts these ideas into practice, as well as developing architectures that are capable of learning from low-level quantum mechanical descriptions of molecules. http://gtn.ai.

Lawrence Phillips studied Physics at Imperial College, did a PhD at Heriot Watt in ultracold atoms and few-body theory, then went into industry working on deep learning. He worked at Cambridge Consultants in their AI research team for about a year before moving to GTN.
