Is religion the original He-man, Woman-haters Club?

Details
With all the supposed controversy over the Obama administration's new policy on contraceptive coverage and the resulting backlash by the Catholic Church, I was reminded of the many instances, both past and present, of women being subjugated and dismissed by many of the religions. So, let's talk about whether this is real or imagined, how it came about, what can be done about it, and where it might go in the future.
This was also inspired by a recent edition of The Diane Rehm Show, which I'd recommend you listen to prior to the Meetup. It's linked here (http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2012-02-08/religous-liberty-politics-and-women%E2%80%99s-health-care). And the title of this Meetup is an homage to The Little Rascals (http://youtu.be/wBIC8JTQMMQ), in case you were wondering.
A few of the things to consider include:
Mormons and polygamy Catholic Church and its failure to include women in its hierarchy Islam in general, and what's with the 72 virgins? The Susan G. Komen Foundation dust-up with Planned Parenthood This will hopefully lead to a robust discussion and I hope many of our female members attend. And, yes, my mom is back in town, so I'm sure she'll add her two cents.
Please join us for this important and timely event.
While I haven't chosen a venue yet, it will probably be at Dolores Restaurant due to its private room and central location. But stay tuned for details!
