Monthly DC 310 meeting

CRASH Space

We're wanting to do this once a month on the third Saturday, typically from 5-7 PM. Space is limited, so please only RSVP if you're confident you can make it. We will announce topics and speakers as they are confirmed. Presenter: Alex Clark Head of Security Engineering at Realtor.com Title: lighting up your universe, a guide to finding all your marbles {"apps"}. Summary: Often overlooked by traditional solutions, engineers are building at an increasing velocity, and security is not only struggling to catch up, but often we are blindsided with some new app we never knew existed. This talk presents how we faced this challenge head on, and how we developed and built our solution. Description: In this talk, we will discuss why microservice, apl and application identification is crucial and relevant, even if you don't think you have developers, or "web apps", you might find out otherwise. We will discuss several threats; like supply chain compromise, wide vulnerability footprints and microservices sprawl. The presentation will show how we wrapped our arms around the problem and how we built highly scalable automation systems in an iterative MVP (minimum viable product) approach that lit up our universe and our passions. The slides cover everything from a modern devops workflow, typical security controls in application security, typical inventory management systems, why app, api and microservice identification is important, threats and vectors of compromise to modern apps, our prototype process for identification, our iterative steps for improvements and feature editions, our current features and level of metadata collection, and finally our lessons learned and areas for additions and improvements. At the end of this talk you should understand a few ways to identify application stacks, areas of metadata that should be inventoried within the application, and how we automated the process and how to get started on our own journey. We'll follow up with socializing and attendees can either stick around for Crash Space's movie night (Details - https://blog.crashspace.org/) or meetup for drinks at a nearby spot (TBD).
