• 3-Day Spontaneous Writing Retreat! (creative nonfiction)

    Joshua Tree Retreat Center

Spontaneous creative nonfiction writing retreat! November 22nd through 24th 11:30am Friday through 2:30pm Sunday Joshua Tree Retreat Center This will be three days spent writing spontaneous creative nonfiction, telling our own stories. Check-in begins at 10am, and our first session will start promptly at 11:30am. We'll use writing prompts to do timed writings throughout the three days. Because the writing is impromptu, the feedback will focus on specific aspects of the work we especially like, how it makes us feel. Great food and glorious desert setting included! Participation is limited, so please reserve your spot early. ($100 discount when you register by August 31st.) https://499words.org/retreat/ Please message me or call if you have any questions. I hope to have the chance to work together soon! Riba ______________________ Riba Taylor[masked]https://noholdsbarred.blog/ P.S. As of today, October 12th, there are still a handful of spots left if you'd like to join us! (Attendees are not listed here because the registration takes place via the link above rather than through Meetup.)

  • Spontaneous writing group

    Cathedral City Branch Library

Come write with us at the library! We do short, timed writings together from writing prompts (or from words drawn from the magic word pouch!). We read our impromptu work out loud and receive good, specific feedback from the group, words or phrases that strike people, images, feelings the work evokes. (There is no critique, no advice for strengthening the writing, because this is spontaneous writing, not polished work.) We meet most Mondays from 10:15am to 12:15pm (generally skips the 4th Monday each month) Cathedral City Library Please bring paper and pen or pencil instead of planning to write on a laptop or a phone unless you have a disability that prevents you from writing by hand. Thanks! This is a great chance to encourage agile writer's minds, to stretch, to bypass our critic and censor, practice sharing our impromptu work, grow larger in ourselves, connect. Where our room is When you walk into the library, you'll immediately turn right and walk to the big meeting room just past the tables of free books. Please plan to come early. (Late arrivals are disruptive.) Dress in layers to avoid being too cold or too warm. ;-) Please RSVP, and please be conscientious about changing your RSVP to "no" if you are unable to attend. Thanks very much.

  • Process and Craft --- Playing with creating scenes!

We'll play with ways to develop scenes using a fun, impromptu approach that includes practicing various elements including setting description, dialog, sensory details, action and internal dialog. Plan to do some writing together in our notebooks, too! We will literally be playing with scenes. ;-) This is a completely interactive session as if we were in the same room together, listening, talking, laughing, writing. (Well, we are in the same room together---the Zoom room!) Meeting via computer or mobile device (or by phone) is surprisingly akin to being together in "real life" (!!) and offers the added bonus of seeing each participant as though we are sitting directly across from each other. This session is offered via Zoom videoconferencing software. The link and instructions to attend the meeting will be sent through Meetup (no later than one hour before the event, but usually earlier that day). We will all write together "live," and depending on the number of people, we may break into small groups for part of the work. This event is fee-based, and tickets are NONREFUNDABLE (unless the meeting itself is cancelled or rescheduled by the organizer). RSVPs will close at 5:44pm the evening of the event.
