Talk: Soft-ish skills: Benefits of a firm foundation

Employers look for a balance of hard and soft skills. Soft skills demonstrate character traits, interpersonal skills and affect an individual’s day-to-day experience of work. I’ll focus in on three soft skills with a view to reducing pain points. I’ll invite you to have some personal check-in moments so bring whatever writing implement suits you (— listening is fine too).

In this talk Tarnjit will share how failing with (semi-)style and managing Generalised Anxiety Disorder has provided ‘what went well’ and ‘what didn’t go so well’ moments of learning. She will also share some practical methods for self-evaluation.

Talk: "This is not what we wanted": Talking with voice assistants

I will offer a window into work being done at the University of Nottingham that is examining how voice UIs like the Amazon Echo actually come to be used in domestic social settings. I'll be asking the question: is talking with Amazon Echo really much like an actual conversation? As part of this I will analyse audio recordings of Echo actual use in the home to explore just how people 'talk' with machines.
