Practical Systems Thinking for Healthcare Design
Healthcare, with its deeply interconnected systems, opaque processes, extensive regulations and highly specialized knowledge, can strain even the most robust design practice. Foundational principles of design thinking and human-centered design, such as narrowly defined users, concisely articulated root-cause problems and optimally balanced solutions can be irrelevant or worse, counter productive, when applied in healthcare contexts. Mainstream design tools, such as personas, journey maps and value proposition canvases can seem hopelessly simplistic. In this talk, Julie will share her journey from the tech industry to healthcare and the search that it inspired for ’healthcare grade’ design methods. Through a combination of presentation and hands-on activities, she’ll introduce concepts and frameworks derived from systems thinking and systemic design, discuss how they can be adapted to everyday UX design practice, and share strategies for planning design projects that anticipate and accommodate the complexity of healthcare. SCHEDULE 6:00 - 6:30p | mingling & conversation 6:30 - 8:00p | guest speaker, followed by Q&A 8:00 - 8:30p | more conversation and clean up ABOUT THE SPEAKER Julie Guinn is the User Experience Design Lead for Precision Medicine at Elsevier where she focuses on next-generation platforms for clinical data aquisition and decision support. What we're about

Welcome to Design for Healthcare. Our goal is to bring together people who are interested in the intersection of design and healthcare. Every other month, we will facilitate panel discussions, lightning talks, workshops, and networking opportunities covering topics such as behavior design and health, designing culture and organization change, and accessibility and communication. We look forward to creating an inclusive community which explores how design can shape better patient and clinician experiences.
