Designing for Teens in Health & Wellness

Details

We're super excited to welcome Mei Hsieh (98point6) and Andrea Kang (Artefact) for a talk about designing for adolescents and young adults, or "AYAs".

Given COVID-19 and the broader adoption of online learning, technology has become an essential tool deeply intertwined in the lives of adolescents and young adults. There is a unique opportunity to consider this demographic not only as key stakeholders in social media and educational platforms, but as stewards navigating their own health and emotional wellbeing.

Mei and Andrea will be sharing what they learned while creating an app for AYAs centered around stress and resilience, and will leave us with principles to consider when designing for this important audience.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Mei Hsieh
Mei is a user experience designer tackling better healthcare solutions for physicians at the on-demand text-based primary care company, 98point6. As a clinician UX designer, every day she gets to think about and create the best experience for physicians. This means empowering them with the right tools to focus on making the right assessment, meet patients’ needs and create the best plan for care.

After earning an industrial design degree at the University of Cincinnati, her experience in the medical industry and hands-on philanthropic service work in Guatemala sparked a passion for using design to impact social change.Throughout the 6+ years in the industry, Mei has had the opportunity to collaborate with impactful companies such as the Gates Foundation, Microsoft, Seattle Children’s Hospital and Intuitive Surgical. She is driven to tackle complex problems head on, and strives to create products that improve meaningful outcomes for users. Lately, during quarantine, Mei can be found playing her 100th game of Catan; attempting to recreate a favorite past-time ice cream flavor; or teaching her corgi, Pico, a new trick.

Andrea Kang
As a Senior Interaction Designer at Artefact—a strategy + design firm based in Seattle, WA—Andrea designs digital health experiences and educational tools for youth. Passionate about building community through inclusive and equitable practices, she is as much a designer as she is a facilitator, strategist, and researcher.

A rare Seattle native, Andrea graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Interaction Design from the School of Art + Art History + Design as well as a degree in Marketing from the Foster School of Business. When she’s not thinking about how to make the world a more equitable place, she’s at her craft table or overwatering her plants, all under the watchful eye of her cat.
