PRESENTATIONS:

An Intro to Developing for Apple Platforms

It seems like every month, Apple’s releasing a new platform, device, language, or compiler. We’re up to four platforms—OS X, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS—and billions of devices sold worldwide. These platforms all build on 30+ years of technology dating back to NeXTSTEP, of all things. In this talk, let’s take a tour of what it takes to build apps for these platforms, how to share your code between them, and what benefits and tradeoffs there are in each of these platforms.

presented by Jeff Kelley

Jeff Kelley is an iOS developer at Detroit Labs and published author of Developing Apps for Apple Watch and Learn Cocoa Touch for iOS. He got his start with programming at the age of five, modifying programs his mom dutifully typed from a magazine into Qbasic (thanks, Mom!). He’s been working with iOS since its infancy in 2008, and before that managed the OS X environment at the University of Michigan, where he obtained a very-related degree in Philosophy. Apps he’s worked on that you’ve likely seen are the Domino’s Pizza iOS ordering app and 3D Pizza Builder, the award-winning Chevy Game Time second-screen Super Bowl experience, and the DTE Energy outage center app. When not working on iOS apps, Jeff listens to an inordinate amount of podcasts and organizes the Motor City CocoaHeads group in Detroit.

Apps that Jeff has written have been in the top 10 of the entire App Store, have generated millions in weekly revenue, and have consistently been among the highest-rated.

Craftsman's Corner: A Live TDD Kata

A slight twist on our old monthly small presentations. James will take a few minutes to introduce the concept of test-driven development. Then he will solve a simple kata using TDD. He's never done this in a room full of his peers so, if nothing else, it should be entertaining!

presented by James York

James York is one half of the reason this group exists. He's a coder of things and a teacher of things.
