February DevOps Galway Meetup

Details

DevOps Galway are delighted to kick off a new season of meetups for 2020, and are pleased to bring you our February event:

  • Our first talk is from Mark O'Connor and is entitled "Argo Deploy Yourself". This will demonstrate how to implement a GitOps solution for deploying applications onto Kubernetes.

About Mark:

He is a Sysops engineer working for Teamwork, a Cork based Software-as-a-Service company. Prior to that he worked in a variety of roles in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. While he is passionate cloud technologist, the second obsession in his life is as a Scout volunteer; a pursuit that ensures he wanders outdoors occasionally :-)

  • Our second talk is from Daragh Bailey, named, "How to avoid submission /dev/null and why bother"

In this talk, Darragh will focus on what talk submission reviewers are looking for, using examples based on recent Devopsdays Galway conference Call for papers, as well as touching on why you should speak, and what to consider once your submission is accepted.

Starting with a quick summary of some reasons to consider speaking at tech events, covering both professional and personal. We'll then go over how to get a submission accepted, covering some common reasons for unaccepted talks based on reviews from the last three Devopsdays Galway call for papers. This will be done using accepted talk abstracts, contrasted against pseudo examples based on submissions that didn't match well with the review criteria for this particular conference. We'll share some insights on how the review process works, why reducing bias through initial anonymous reviews is important, and how balancing topics can all impact selection. Finally, for the convinced/converted some resources on how to put together a talk, common tips explained such as why contact details should appear on every slide, why consider waiting until accepted to write the talk, and how make it easier to deliver including tips picked up from reading, watching, as well as occasionally having to get up and speak.

During this you should see a pattern in layout of the easiest talks to review, importance of considering event audience, the specific points to cover within an abstract, as well as some behind the scenes understanding of what goes into talk selection process and how that can impact your submission. Some simple takeaways on why to speak at events, that everything you do is worth considering for submission, picking the right events, how to submit, and where to find out more.

About Darragh:

He is a developer at HPE interested in all things CI/CD. He has worked a number of tools which are Open Source including Jenkins Job Builder, git-upstream, and vagrant-libvirt. Darragh is also an organizer for the DevOps Days Galway.

Pizza's & Refreshments will be available on the evening sponsored by HPE.
