Troubleshooting and testing CI/CD is a horrible time consuming pain. Niall wants to share a pattern that is quite helpful, where you invert this model and pull the heavy lifting out of Jenkins/Github/Gitlab, into templated scripts you can test and refine locally.
Working with a local development team to Dockerize their Python environment, Niall started playing around with embedding the pipeline logic inside the development environment. This pattern of pulling the pipeline out of the CI tooling changed the way he thought about managing pipeline code.
After seeing a few examples of what others where doing with this technique, he started using Python’s cookiecutter library to mass produce his CI/CD from a simple base template. The end result has let him spin up new projects incredibly quickly, with complete CI at day zero with no additional work.
With the hopes of this being of interest to others, Niall proposes that this pattern could be taken even further, and since testing pipelines can be a mind numbing procedure, he wants to test this locally.
