Sacred Song and Chant

Song & Chant Sharing Circles

Presented by Tymn Urban & Dakini Uma Amitabha

Learn New Songs! Build community! Be inspired! Heal the Earth!

We teach an extensive collection of original, contemporary and time honored songs that have been passed down over the years. These circles are not only about learning the songs that we have to share. This is an encouraging environment in which your favorite songs and chants will also be welcome. Selections should be easy to teach, with minimal lines and verses.

You are also welcome and encouraged to bring your drums and shakers. Although this is not a drum circle or jam, sensitively played rhythmic instruments can add depth to this experience. (Melodic instruments such as guitars or accordions are not recommended.)

Come expand your knowledge-base of songs and chants that form an environment for healing and community, while allowing you to express love for the earth, spirit, and humanity. Simple but profound, these circles are devoted to the spirit of music and creativity.
In this type of sharing, we sit in a circle together. In the center will be a collection of drums and shakers. If you have a spare drum, we welcome you to offer it for others to play. We will begin sharing songs around the circle sun-wise (clock-wise).

You are encouraged, but not required, to bring a song/chant to share. We will use a "talking stick", and if you choose you can “pass” to the next person over. When someone begins a song let them sing it all the way through for one complete round. After the first round, or as you start to get the words and the melody, please join in with the other voices; find a place inside the group sound. We will sing each song for several rounds.
We like to allow a moment of silence between each new song. (The space of one breath will suffice.)

Please leave and enter the circle conscientiously. We usually take a brief ten minute break in the middle of our allotted time. This is a perfect opportunity to write down the words to songs, ask questions, and get to know each other better.

We try to give each person an opportunity to share by the end of the circle. Once everyone has had a chance to contribute, we will begin a "popcorn" style of sharing for the second round. At the end of the circle time, we create a soundscape together using vocal expressions that may include words, sounds, rhythms, and tones. Anything goes. We just try to feel where it is going and be in the moment. These expressions are always uniquely beautiful and inspiring.
Each person adds their voice or rhythm to the sound until it blossoms, and then we let it go. In closing, we offer gratitude to Spirit and open the circle.
