Talk title: Burnout: The non-glamorous part of DevRel
Presenter: Dawn Parzych
Abstract: Flying to speak at one conference after another and becoming internet famous is the glamorous life of DevRel. But this lifestyle comes at a cost—burnout.
We praise teams and individuals for going the extra mile, booking back to back trans-atlantic flights, working on the weekend. We label these people the go-to person or rockstar. Our competitive nature kicks in and we work harder so we can be seen as a hero, creating a vicious cycle of people trying to out-do each other.
But, what happens when colleagues fail to meet deadlines or flub a talk? We ridicule, shame, or even fire them. This is not healthy and leads to burnout.
You can only give 110% for so long before burnout and other mental or physical health issues rear their ugly heads.
This talk will explore what we can do to avoid burnout in ourselves and others:
Check-in on people’s mental and physical wellbeing.
Recognize signs of anxiety and stress in ourselves and others and encourage one another to take a break.
Mentor and teach others to improve.
Show appreciation for the little things as well as the big.
Experience more positive events than negative.
