Title: The Commodore 64
Experience the bleeding edge of consumer electronics from 1982 with one of the highest-selling computers of all time, the Commodore 64! We will briefly look at the specs and discuss developing for the Commodore 64 in BASIC and Machine Code. Physical equipment will be available for attendees to interact with

Title: Hello Julia
I'd like to share a quick look at my new obsession: Julia that I recently discovered while searching for the best language for doing number crunching. It is a super fast and fun language and is definitely something to be aware of for any datascience, machine learning or mathematical projects.
Facilitator: Marius Kruger
I'm a long-time software developer, loving the free-software/Java side of things. I'm always looking at ways to improve, be it learning new technologies or improving processes.
I've worked with many languages and frameworks over the years, some of the main ones that shaped my thinking were (in no particular order): Basic:) , Pascal, Java, C++, Perl, Python, Bash and now Julia - I can appreciate the evolution and how languages try to take the best of it's predecessors and try to do it right this time. And so for some reason I found myself loving Julia. Other things I like: TDD, BDD, DDD :) , Docker, Camunda, Lombok, Spring, Ubuntu, Teslamotors, Spacex, Openscad (3d printing), Arduino (electronics).

Title: Intro into AWS and Serverless Functions
Part 1 - AWS Core services:
-
The AWS web console: the entry point for configuring your infrastructure in the AWS cloud
-
The Free Tier and how to setup billing alerts
-
Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances, and the ease with which you can pick a particular Amazon Machine Image (AMI) for your workload, and spin it up as an instance right away
-
How to create and deploy a high-availability web application in AWS, with an Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) and a multi-availability-zone Relational-Database-Service (RDS) instance
-
How CloudFormation can automate all of the above.
Part 2 - Serverless Functions:
Serverless architecture allows developers to focus on code and their business problem rather than spending time looking after backend infrastructure. Serverless architecture can help developers build scalable, high-performing, and cost-effective applications quickly
We will talk about how serverless architecture and AWS Lambda can make things easier, cheaper, and help to accelerate development of projects.
Facilitator:
Rory Preddy
Rory has worked in many of the blue chip companies in Johannesburg. A Developer since 2001 , he is lucky enough to work full time in R&D at BBD which gives him an unparalleled insight into industry movement. He is a co-organizer of the Jozi-JUG and AWS-Jozi and is a passionate technology Evangelist.
