Studying can be tough going, despite the best intentions when we start!

I’ve been through a part time PHD and I’ve run workshops with postgrad students for 5 years. I’ve learnt the following which I would like to share.

·All students need practical tips and techniques for planning and managing their study, regardless of the level at which they are studying
·All students struggle, at some level, with writing. Most qualifications require some level of writing.

·It is possible to finish your studies, if you can get these aspects right.
·Also many people have others in their home that are studying – spouse, children, parents etc. With everyone working from home (living at work) its getting tougher to stay focused and manage boundaries. We are all far more involved in each other’s lives and students particularly need our support.

Peter Alkema

Peter helps lead digital transformation at FirstRand, the biggest financial services group in Africa.

He has spent 15 years in IT both in consulting and banking where he has led large IT implementations and operational teams. He has spoken at industry conferences in Frankfurt, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg.

In 2020 he completed his PhD at Wits University and developed a ground-breaking theory of Agile teams.

In 2016 he was awarded Visionary CIO of the year by ITWeb and Gartner.

Teams can also easily integrate this IDE into a Full cloud development environment for remote DevOps projects. Join me as we show you how to get started, develop, deploy, and integrate with your DevOps projects and CodeSpaces

Session 2
Adding some infrastructure to your deploys

Come join us for a fun session showing how you can get started with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform. We will demo how to spin up some infrastructure, and then include it in your CI/CD pipeline to start doing the same PR–review–merge–deploy workflow you are used to for your code. The session will be mostly hands-on coding in the terminal where we will spin up some infrastructure locally using Terraform, and then add it to the deployment pipeline.

Cobus Bernard

Cobus is a Senior Developer Advocate at AWS empowering developers know and understand how best to use AWS. His primary interests are in security, containers and DevOps. Prior to joining AWS, he was a customer for 8 years building in the FinTech, HealthCare and Online Gaming space. During his 14 years of development, he has worked on C#/Java backends, done a bit of Android / iOS app development and some game development, one which is available on Steam. In the last few years he has focussed on spreading DevOps best practices and helping companies adopt them. He is also passionate about community involvement and founded the Cape Town DevOps Meetup group in 2015 and co-organises DevOpsDays Cape Town.
