The first ever Devoxx in the USA will be happening on 21-23 March, 2017 in San Jose Convention Center. We are happy to announce that Devoxx4Kids will be happening on the Sunday before and targeted at kids to get them excited about STEM.

So what will you do in this day long event?

There will 4 parallel workshops in the morning and afternoon. Each workshop has a capacity and first come first serve.

• Defeat the Zombies with Java and Raspberry Pi : Evil zombies have taken over the planet. You are one of the last survivors and need to retake the planet. Work with the other zombie exterminators in the lab to push back the undead. To fight off the zombies we will give you a Raspberry Pi, touchscreen, Java, and some cool embedded sensors.

Prerequisite Knowledge : Basic computer knowledge and desire to learn.

Instructor : Cassandra Chin

Time : 10:00 - 12:00

• Building Lightsabers Workshop : A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, there was a tradition of Younglings constructing their first lightsaber on the way to becoming a Padawan and ultimately a Jedi Knight. This tradition will continue at Devoxx4Kids as the Devoxx Younglings learn about basic electronics and build their own lightsabers in this fun-filled workshop surrounded by the Force.

Instructor : Christopher M. Judd

Time : 10:00 - 12:00

• Catching Pokémon with Phaser: Have you ever wondered how browser games are developed? Have you played Pokémon games before? If you answered yes to one of these questions, then this workshop is for you! You will see how to develop a simple browser game in HTML and JavaScript, using a game engine called Phaser. To begin, we will run a game that I created, together. Pokémon will appear on the screen and your task will be to catch them all. After the demonstration, you will be able to modify the game to your liking – exhibiting the ease in which it is to develop games.

Requirement : Computer with any operating system and preferably Chrome browser.

Instructor : Wojtek Wilk

Time : 10:00 - 12:00

•How to send a secret message : Suppose you want to send a message to your friend who lives far away, without anyone else knowing the message. You could hand-deliver the message to your friend. Or you could ask someone to deliver it for you. But what happens if the message is lost, or if someone steals it along the way? Can you be certain that a stranger who reads your message will not be able to understand what it says?
Mathematicians and generals have been studying the best way to send a secret message for thousands of years. But it was not until recently they discovered how to send a secret message securely - and easily. In this workshop, you will learn how to make and break ciphers, and how to send a secret message that will be difficult (or impossible) for even the smartest strangers to read.

Requirement :

• Basic computer knowledge and a desire to learn.
• PC or Mac with a working USB port and minimum of 1.5 GB disk space.

Instructor : Breandan Considine & Nikhil Nanivadekar

Time : 10:00 - 12:00

• Introduction to Arduino: In this hands-on workshop we will introduce the basic concepts applied for connecting “things” in the real world to the digital world, using Arduino Uno, an open-source micro-controller. Kids will “make” couple of circuits and learn basic concepts from physics like electricity, voltage, current, resistance. They will get to know sensors and actuators. They will also learn how to write software for Arduino, upload it to Arduino and make it control a circuit (sensors/actuators) connected to it.

Requirement :

• Each attendee must have a laptop (Windows or Mac only)
• At least 2 GB of free disk space and 4 GB RAM
• Pre-install Arduino IDE prior to the workshop https://www.arduino.cc/en/main/software

Instructor : Pradeep Bhatter, Pavi Bhatter

Time : 13:00 - 15:00

• Play Pokemon using Dr. Watson: Have you been puzzled by which Pokémon and what powers to use against your opponent and defeat him in no uncertain terms ! Let's hire Dr. Watson's Artificial Intelligence and design a playmate. You shall never lose another Pokémon Game!

Requirement : Laptop or tablet

Instructor : Sandhya Kapoor, Oliver Rodriguez

Time : 13:00 - 15:00

• Build You First iPhone App Using Swift: If you enjoy iPhone or iPad Apps, and wonder how to develop them, this is the beginner class for you. Apple’s platform Xcode, is free to install on any MacBook or Mac Air. We will go over the Swift language, explain how Swift works and show you Xcode tool. In the second half, we will develop an ImagePicker App, how to get images free from Internet and build a dynamic app using it. As you move your picker, images change. We will show you how Apple Developer License works and how to publish your app at apple store.

Requirement and Installation :

• Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.1 or higher) is required. You can download free from Apple site
(Click Apple Menu, top left corner, click 'About this Mac', click 'Software Update')

• Install Xcode as follows:
Open up Launchpad from your Mac
Open up the Mac App Store from Launchpad
Search for Xcode
Click on “Get”
Click on “Install App”
Enter in all information that is prompted

• Once installed, launch Xcode using Spotlight. Click on "Xcode", "About", and check the minimum version of 8.2.0 (or later). Newer release of Xcode is better as Swift is an evolving platform.

Instructor : Anoop Trivedi

Time : 13:00 - 15:00

• Building a elevator with Lego Mindstorms: Lego Mindstorms are programmable "bricks" that can be combined with electric motors, transmitters, ultrasonic sensors, ultraviolet, color and light as well as pulleys (such as gears, axles, beams, and hydraulic components) suitable to build robots and other automated or interactive systems. In this workshop, kids will work in groups to assemble an elevator using the Lego Mindstorms blocks and write a program to move it up/down and stop between floors.

Requirement : Basic computer knowledge and a desire to learn.

PC or Mac with a working USB port and minimum of 1.5 Gb disk space. Suitable for age group 8 to 12 years

Instructor : Nikhil Nanivadekar, Luke Torjussen

Time : 13:00 - 15:00

Important Notes

• Each attendee must read requirements and do installation before attending the workshop. You can find them above under each workshop description.
