The Dewdrop World Haiku Society of San Diego (DWHS) is a Meetup group dedicated to the study and practice of Japanese short-form poetry (haiku and senryu) in English. The title, "Dewdrop World," is borrowed from a haiku by Kobayashi Issa:

this dewdrop world
is a dewdrop world
and yet, and yet...
(translated by Lewis Mackenzie)

We plan to have at least one meeting per month with a short lesson given by the organizer or co-organizer (or a special guest), followed by a critique. Each haijin (haiku poet) will select one or more of his/her haiku/senryu to be critiqued by the society members. This is a friendly group where positive comments are welcomed and constructive criticism is given in the most helpful and tactful way.

In addition, we will have ginko (haiku) walks or hikes in an outdoor setting to encourage haiku writing (we welcome suggestions for locations anytime). After the walk, we will adjourn to a local coffee shop or restaurant (or member's house if offered) to polish our haiku. Each participant will donate a dollar to the kitty to be used as a prize. Then comes the read-around where any or all may share their haiku, after which a vote will be taken to determine the most popular. The winning haijin receives the kitty. This is not a critique session. If there is time, other haiku that were shared may be discussed and appreciated.

Both the organizer and co-organizer are published haijin and the organizer is a well-respected poetry teacher who teaches workshops throughout the county.

Anyone, beginner or experienced haijin, is welcome to join. Come, be a part of our group's journey exploring the world of haiku poetry.
