ABOUT OUR EVENT:
In this talk, Dave Rich will take us back in time to the birth of NCSA Mosaic, or simply Mosaic, which is the web browser that popularized the World Wide Web and the Internet.
Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where David was a student. He’ll share his insights and experiences during those very exciting times that laid the ground work for many things we take for granted today.
Mosaic was also a client for earlier internet protocols such as File Transfer Protocol, Network News Transfer Protocol, and Gopher. The browser was named for its support of multiple internet protocols. Its intuitive interface, reliability, Microsoft Windows port and simple installation all contributed to its popularity within the web, as well as on Microsoft operating systems. Mosaic was also the first browser to display images in line with text instead of displaying images in a separate window. While often described as the first graphical web browser, Mosaic was preceded by WorldWideWeb, the lesser-known Erwise and ViolaWWW.
It is by more clearly understanding our past that we can appreciate our present and perhaps gain greater insights as to where our future might take us.
