DigitalOcean Amsterdam: The February Edition

Details

Its February, the first (and arguably the most depressing) month of the year is done and we are speeding towards the summer! Its about time we have another meetup.

We will try to livestream the evening at https://youtu.be/joMSHYQapjQ

This month we've got 2 speakers:

Docker Inside/Out: The ‘real’ Real-World of Stacking Containers in Production

So you’ve already containerised the shit out of your code, broken down monoliths, microserviced the hell out of your app and have run some awesome workloads in your local, dev and test environments. It’s all looking good, but now what?

Running Docker commands is one thing, but maintaining containers in production is a whole other ballgame. So during this talk I’ll show you the REAL wild world of Docker in production. With the added benefit of talking to and observing how over 900 of our customers have been using Docker in production, I’ll be presenting some of these data points and sharing our observations on how to get it right.

My aim? I want to turn the conversation on its head and dispel some of the ‘silver bullet’ assumptions flying around by taking an inside-out approach to building with Docker. The idea is to provide you with a framework for how to get your code into containers, streamline the Docker build flow and avoid common pitfalls when moving from dev to live environments.

Because remember, Docker will NOT, and I repeat, will not solve your bad dev and ops behaviours. So don’t end up with a ‘hot mess’ (more on that later), and attend my talk to get container smart

Bio

Daniël van Gils is a developer advocate at Cloud 66. He helps other developers craft ruby (on rails) web applications and container based microservice architectures with ♥, to deploy on any server or public cloud. He’s been involved in the web development, creative technologies, and gaming industries. An accomplished creative technologist, Daniel has vast and varied experience in application development, agile workflows, lecturing and building container technologies at scale. In his spare time he experiments with strawberries in his backyard, likes to surf and practices improvisation theatre.

The Road To Continuous Deployment: A Case Study

It's a situation many of us are familiar with: a large legacy, monolithic application, limited or no tests, slow & manual release process, low velocity, no confidence... A lot of refactoring is required, but management keeps pushing for new features. How to proceed? Using examples and lessons learned from a real-world case, I'll show you how to replace a legacy application with a modern service-oriented architecture and build a continuous integration and deployment pipeline to deliver value from the first sprint. On the way, we’ll take a look at the process, automated testing, monitoring, master/trunk based development and various tips and best practices.

Bio

Michiel Rook is a Java/PHP/Scala contractor and consultant from the Netherlands. He loves coaching teams to develop better software and implement continuous deployment. He is a co-founder of Make.io and a member of the Dutch Web Alliance. When he’s not thinking about continuous deployment he enjoys music, cars, sports and movies.

Come along, drink some beers (or other cold beverages), munch on a slice of pizza and meet other developers. Have a good time and maybe you'll learn something. Its a community driven meetup so there will be a relaxed atmosphere without pesky recruiters or overly-heavy brand sponsorships.

The provisional structure is as follows:

  • 6:00 - Doors open - Grab a drink, get a seat and have a chat

  • 7:00 - Brief introduction

  • 7:05 - Daniël van Gils - Docker Inside/Out: The ‘real’ Real-World of Stacking Containers in Production

  • 7:50 - Brief interlude - Chance to grab another drink and toilet break

  • 7:55 - Michiel Rook - The Road To Continuous Deployment: A Case Study

  • 8:40 - Closing remarks then pizza and socialising

RSVP's start on 1st February at 10am!

The DigitalOcean Community (https://www.digitalocean.com/community) has all the resources you need to go from development to production, and please read the Events Code of Conduct (http://do.co/newmeetup) before attending.

Thanks,
David
