Kubernetes with Kafka flavour - Christmas Saga edition

Details

What we'll do

It's Christmas time! We thought it's best to celebrate with friends and family!
We are happy to invite You to the warm Flaconi spaces.

As the saga continues also this month we will be talking about Kubernetes.
Kubernetes is an exceptional piece of technology and has pushed the IT world a big piece forward. It simplifies the live of many developers and is the "synergy space", where DevOps and Developers collaborate together.

Agenda
18:00–18:20: Eat, drink, mingle

18:20–18:30: Introductions

18:30–19:00: "Orchestrate Apache Kafka® on Kubernetes" by Hellmar Becker (@Hellmar_Becker (https://twitter.com/Hellmar_Becker), https://github.com/hellmarbecker), Systems Engineer at Confluent

Many organisations have adopted micro- services architectures to evolve their systems away from the slow and unresponsive shared-state architectures of the past. Apache Kafka is often chosen to be the backbone for these event driven services.
While the main drivers for adopting micro-services architectures are to improve speed and agility for the development of applications, it also inherently increases operational complexity due to its distributed nature. To deal with that, many have encountered the need for systems that help automate and manage their micro-services deployment; adopting container technologies like Docker and orchestration frameworks like Kubernetes along the way.

19:00–19:30: More eating, drinking, and mingling

19:30–20:00: "Setting up Kafka clusters using K8s operators - Part 2" by Dan Vaida (@dan_vaida (https://twitter.com/dan_vaida)), Sys Admin & Solutions Architect

The goal of this talk series is to present how easy it is to deploy a Kafka cluster these days. Using Kubernetes, Helm and the concept of operator You will be able to deploy clusters without any hustle.

In "Part 2" we cover a solid base of what is needed to work with Kafka on Kubernetes. Dan will introduce to You the mighty Kafka operator.

Get guided through the technical jungle by experienced ranger Dan.

20:00–20:15 Socializing

20:15–20:45: "Inspektor Gadget and traceloop" by Alban Crequy (@albcr (https://twitter.com/albcr)), CTO & Co-Founder at Kinvolk

Alban will present Inspektor Gadget and traceloop, a tracing tool to trace system calls in cgroups or in containers using BPF and overwritable ring buffers.

Many people use the "strace" tool to synchronously trace system calls using ptrace. Traceloop similarly traces system calls but asynchronously in the background, using BPF and tracing per cgroup. The talk will show how it can be integrated with systemd and with Kubernetes via Inspektor Gadget.
