This group meets to introduce you to the sport of rowing. Rowing is a fun, challenging, sport that is most popular in the parts of the country (and world) that have more water! But we're here to tell you that rowing in this desert is more accessible than you think!
Discover Rowing is different from other Meetup groups, in that we won't offer you a "one-off" experience. (Well, only occasionally... like once/twice a year.) Rowing is like golf: you need to learn the basics and practice it a little before you can enjoy the full benefits. (Benefits which include, BTW, a full-body workout, if you're into that sort of thing.) And we can't really just throw you in a boat without a little explanation and demonstration first. That's why our Discover Rowing sessions are in three parts.** We want to encourage you to want to learn more. And if not, that's okay. At least we know we've given you the best info and experience possible to get you started.
Rowing is a rewarding activity but takes time to learn, so we offer you this introduction. It's a FUN introduction though, and we hope it will encourage you to want to row more!
(**All three parts count as one session; you're paying for three-in-one.)
HOW TO FIND US
MARQUEE THEATER IS OUR LANDMARK. The boatyard is located on N. Mill Ave, on the north side of Tempe Town Lake, at the SW corner of Mill Avenue & Washington/Curry Roads, on the opposite side of the road, south, from the theater. Our boats are housed under the 202 Freeway overpass. The address (for your GPS!) is 620 N. Mill Ave, Tempe.
PARKING is under the 202 freeway overpass, just opposite (south of) the Marquee Theater parking lot. It's a theater, so there are often concerts going on when we come to row! The theater will then use "our" parking lot, and charge a fee to park. If a concert is happening, just tell the parking dudes you're there to row, and they'll move the cones and let you in.
Since 1991, Rio Salado Rowing Club, a 501(c)3 organization, has worked to develop the sport of rowing in the Arizona desert. Based at Tempe Town Lake, our members come from all over the greater Phoenix area to enjoy rowing's many health, fitness and social benefits. We provide recreational and competitive rowing opportunities for adults of all experience levels -- novice through world-class rowers -- as well as coaching, classes and learn-to-row events. Rowing education is a major focus of our club. We've designed our classes so that rowers receive the individual attention to progress quickly from beginner to rowing independently on the water.
