EU-Funding - What's Up & What's Next...

Hi everyone,

as some of you might have seen the next Calls for the SME-Instrument in 2016 are 24th of February / 3rd of May / 7th of September / 9th of November (Phase 1 = 50k) and 14th of April / 15th of June / 13th of October (Phase 2 = up to Mio. 2,5€). The total budget has increased from €264,6 Mio. (2015) up to €353,4 Mio. (2016). Good news for Startups: The budget of the topic "Open Disruptive Innovation" (ODI) has increased from €45 Mio. up to €60 Mio. However, as getting the grants is still highly competitive, I would recommend to use this Eligibility Check before spending time & money for the proposal writing: two articles puplished last year, are still very informative: and.

As the EC cannot fund all proposal above threshold it has established a "Seal of Excellence": official certification aims to create synergies with structural funds. If your proposal is above threshold, but does not receive funding due to its ranking position the "Seal of Excellence" should increase chances to access other funding opportunities.

The EC states: "The 'Seal' identifies project proposals which merit funding from alternative sources public or private, national, regional, European or international."

For example, Sweden does already use the "Seal of Excellence" as an "economical way for us to synergize with Horizon 2020", says Karin Aase from Vinnova Sweden, saving a lot of indirect costs for double-submissions and double evaluations of proposals.

Applying for Public Funds in Germany the "Seal of Excellence" is still not accepted in the same way. Talking to the German NCP, they suggested that startups with this certification should adress this issue to the relevant national and regional funding institutions. Please share your experiences, with the "Seal of Excellence" with other group members!

Topics for our next Meetups/Workshops will be:

  • Informal come together, matching  & chance to pitch: Everyone who is or has been active in the field of EU-Funding-Opportunities has the chance to introduce himself. Share knowledge and experiences. Feel free to write me if you would like to present what you're doing, so that we have a list with some pitches in advance, before we open the floor.
  • Funding for Smart Cities & Green Tech. These topics will be of top-priority this year. Feel free to write me, if you would like to partner (room / communication).

Btw: For those of you who will be in Brussels in April (12th-14th) think of joining the EIT Digital Conference & Partner Event: Also have a look at the Startup Europe Tour: - European Startups connect all over the year.

Best & see you soon
