Details

Dear Dockers,

we are happy to announce the 14th Docker Switzerland User Group Meetup. A big shoutout to Cisco Systems for hosting the meetup and to Container Solutions who will sponsor the Apéro.

The agenda:

18:00 - Intro and Welcome

18:15 to 18:45 - Talk by Manuel Ramirez López, ZHAW: Predictable elasticity of Docker applications

18:45 to 19:15 - Talk by Jochen Zehnder, netIT-Service: Introduction to the Moby Project

19:15 to 19:45 - Talk by Bruno Grazioli, ZHAW: Deploying applications to Heterogeneous Hardware using Rancher and Docker

19:45 - socializing and apéro

Abstracts

  1. Assuming a deployment of an application composed of multiple Docker containers, how can we figure out the minimum number of instances per container so that a load can be handled but no instance becomes a pure cost factor? In this talk we show why conventional autoscaling is not enough because it only gives us the knowledge after the fact and because it does not consider imbalanced scalability characteristics of applications. We demonstrate a new tool which helps finding (auto)scaling configurations in a scenario service involving MongoDB and application containers.

  2. At DockerCon 2017 the ‘Moby Project’ was announced, with the goal to create an open framework, to assemble specialized container systems. Following the announcement many people in the community were confused about the impact and goal of the changes. In an attempt to clear up the confusion, I will give an introduction into the Moby Project and explain the goals and impacts it has on Docker and the Container Ecosystem.

  3. In this talk, we will describe work we have been doing on deploying containerized applications to heterogeneous compute infrastructures - e.g. a mixed environment comprised of ARM based devices and x86 systems - using Rancher. The talk will start with a brief intro to Rancher and how it can be used to deploy and manage containerized applications. We will then discuss Rancher options for application deployment which include the Rancher-native cattle and Docker Swarm. This will be followed by a description of the work we have done to modify Rancher to provide support for a heterogeneous x86/ARM environment and a short discussion of how applications can be deployed in this context.

See you at the meetup!

Thanks & Regards,

The Organizers
