Hello and welcome to Documentary Film Lovers. The name says it all, we are a community that loves learning about people and the world through the documentary art form.
We get together about once a month to watch a documentary, and sometimes we stay after and talk about it. We also attend documentary screenings at local film festivals and other related events.

For this Special Virtual Documentary Night in honor of Earth Month we are meeting to talk about the documentary, The Civilian Conservation Corps. This film interweaves rich archival imagery with the personal accounts of CCC veterans to tell the story of one of the boldest and most popular New Deal experiments, positioning it as a pivotal moment in the emergence of modern environmentalism and national service. This event is in collaboration with the Veterans For Peace (VFP). VFP is a global organization of Military Veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using their experiences and lifting their voices. They inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. Their network is comprised of over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war, and most significantly, working to end all wars.
For this Special Virtual Documentary Night, in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are meeting to talk about the documentary, In The Name of Democracy. This documentary is about the remarkable case of Lt. Ehren Watada, the first officer in the U.S. Army to refuse to deploy to Iraq on moral grounds. Here is a link to where you can watch it for free. For this Virtual Documentary Night we have voted in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to talk about the documentary, But I Look Like A Lawyer. This film shares stories of the discrimination, stereotyping and bias experienced by members of the Pan-Asian legal community. It aims to increase intercultural awareness and competency, and to surface the complexity of the historical, socio-economic and colonial aspects of these real lived experiences. Co-Director Louisa Winn Q.C. will join us for a special guest Q&A! Again, you must watch the film before attending this event. Here is a link to where you can watch the film for free.

This is a Voting Night, which means at the end of the night we brainstorm and vote to decide as a group what we will watch the following month, so please come ready with your recommendation. The only requirement is that the film must be available to watch online for free. If you need any ideas, you can search through the Flyers Page on the Community Documentary Night website. It is full of flyers based around certain themes and each flyer is full of documentary posters, which are hyperlinked to where you watch the films for free. Something to consider is that next month is June, which is Pride Month and also Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th. Check out the Pride Month flyer and the Juneteenth flyer if you're interested in recommending a film in honor of these holidays.
