What we're about

Complete beginners; people from other strands of Buddhism; enlightened masters; those who are simply curious about meditation-- our zendo welcomes all. We sometimes get twenty+ people show up, we sometimes get only four. On average we get around 6 ~ 12 people attending, which includes regulars and sometimes a couple through Meet-up too. We are an international Zen Buddhist group that has been meeting weekly in the middle of Tokyo on Saturdays for many years. Our main practice is zazen meditation, but we also have lectures by our teachers Peter Rocca and Gerhard Wolfram (and sometimes Oli) where we look at Zen Buddhist philosophy together. It's a relaxed atmosphere. We don't use a kyosaku (the stick you get hit with). Meetings are in English. Discussion and questions are encouraged. There are no fees for the Saturday meetings. We also occasionally go to temples on long holiday weekends for some short retreats, which cost accordingly. Welcome!

Zazen Meditation and Lecture

Tokyo University Young Buddhists Association

We have an hour zazen and kinhin (walking meditation) from 11:00 (I put the start time as 10:45 as it's good for any people new to zazen to get a little bit of instruction before sitting). This session is optional. You can choose to come to just the early sitting, or the later sitting, or come to both. From 12:30 we have another sitting for 30 minutes, and after that we have an hour lecture by Peter Rocca where we usually go over Buddhist philosophy based on the teachings of Master Dogen in his text, The Shobogenzo. It is advisable to wear loose comfortable clothing for sitting zazen. It is advisable to wear loose comfortable clothing for sitting zazen. - NOTE: Numbers from Meetup have to be limited to 15 due to space constraints and fitting in regular non-meetup members also (though we do not usually have such an amount of people signing up from Meetup, this is just in case as we have previously on unpredictable, random occasions). It will be held at the Tokyo University Young Buddhist's Association (they have an office floor in the MUFJ building).
