Help out at the Emmaus Homeless Shelter
There is a great need for volunteers at the Emmaus Shelter in Ellsworth, and DHF members have been helping out there since March of 2016. We will be continuing to help out on the 1st Sat. of each month. People can certainly help out at other times as well. Some of our members go weekly. They need help with the food pantry, also sorting donated linens, housewares and clothing. We have done some painting; lots of cleaning, sorting and organizing; and helped with their sidewalk sale. This is a perfect opportunity for those of us who have been wanting a community service project. There is a volunteer application that will need to be filled out by each volunteer. You can pick one up at the shelter office.

What we're about

Public Group

Downeast Humanists & Freethinkers celebrated its 13th anniversary on January 1, 2018! We meet in Ellsworth on the 1st Saturday of every month at 3:30 pm; upstairs at the Maine Grind. We are an Affiliate of the American Humanist Association.

Our mission: To provide a forum for discussing issues of common interest and concern to humanists and freethinkers, and to promote in the larger community the ideas of humanism and free thought.

Does this describe you?

Humanists believe that, using reason and compassion, we can live ethical and fulfilling lives. We don't look to supernatural explanations or divine intervention to solve the problems of humanity and the planet.

Freethinkers form opinions on the basis of evidence, as opposed to tradition, authority, or dogma.
