Drumming and Dance in Myrtle Beach Pages

About Drumming and Dance in Myrtle Beach

A ceremonial drum - Meditation at Sunrise.
(note the person lying under the drum for connection with both earth and drum vibrations)

We're about learning, developing awareness and finding the spirit in the drums, their feel and sounds, and in the traditions of centuries of drumming. Drumming has always been for many reasons - celebration, ritual, everyday work, attunement, dance.. different forms in different cultures.

What we learn in playing with rhythms from West Africa, Cuba, Haiti, Brazil can build patterns and a feel to use when improvising alone or with a few friends, in drum circles, with rock bands, blues, bluegrass, country, gospel. As we learn awareness and listening skills slowly develop. There are also ongoing classes as well as workshops for growing with the traditional rhythms.

As you progress the bass drums become important - a set of "dununs" played with sticks and bells: usually three drums, each with a different tone and rhythm part. These are key for the rhythms and for dance.

These "Pages" in the MEETUP group will provide basic rhythm parts as a tool for review when learning, as well as examples of traditional and contemporary drumming. Some solo lines to use in improvising. Plus - we include material on special workshops, drum making, events in the region, events elsewhere woth the travel.
