Analysing Politeness: Can NLP Tools Help?

This talk will focus on politeness analysis in film scripts using NLP tools to extract politeness indicators. It will also look at differences between male and female characters and how their politeness strategies might change depending on the gender of the listener. I will cover how the parsers for the film scripts were created and how they can be used for similar datasets.

Lucía Cabrera has recently submitted her PhD thesis on Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Politeness and Gender Effects. Her background is in Linguistics and she is interested in applying NLP techniques in discourse analysis.
