Julia 1.0 is in the horizon and it's getting more traction both in universities and industries. Julia 0.6 (due by Feb 28, 2017) will be the last development version before Julia 1.0 release in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2017.

Julia's growth from beginning of 2016 to beginning of 2017 can be seen in the following statistics: (source: Julia Computing)

  1. Stackoverflow questions: 1,420 vs 2,540 ( +79%)
  2. Registered packages: 690 vs 1,190 ( +72%)
  3. JuliaBox users: 34k vs 58k ( +71%)
  4. Downloads: 346k vs 904k ( +161%)
  5. Published Citations: 143 vs 316 ( +121% )

The first meetup for 2017 will cover the following activities:

  1. Welcome and introduction of new members
  2. Discussion/Demo of latest changes and features of base Julia 0.6
  3. Random thoughts and musings about Julia by organizers and members

In addition, we will cover the following if there's enough time:

  1. New packages for visualisations and machine learning workflows for rapid development and analysis
  2. Latest support for generic GPU computations
