Our 33rd event will take place on the 1st August 2018 at 7:00 pm downstairs in the J.T.Pim's (4 South Great Georges Street · Dublin 2). As usual, we will have three speakers explaining their research.

Dagmara Niedziela is 3rd year PhD student, During my PhD based at University College Dublin. Her project looks at the differences between strains (genetically different clones) of Staphylococcus aureus (a bacteria!) that cause mastitis (a breast disease) in cows, and specifically at the outcome of the disease after infections with various strains of this bacterium. She received the best presentation award at a veterinary conference and now wants to try her presentation skills in another setting!

Conor McGeough is an SFI funded student in the School of Physical Sciences in DCU. His research is focused on how the electrical and chemical properties of materials change when transitioning from 3 dimensional to 2 dimensional materials (due to quantum mechanics). 2D materials hold a lot of promise for the future development of microelectronics, and understanding their properties is the first step. He studies the chemistry of these materials using x-ray techniques and can “see” how individual atoms behave on the surface. This research works toward improving the energy efficiency and power output of microprocessors of the future.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. And as always, if you are interested in taking part in future events as a speaker, which usually take place on the first Wednesday of the month, please contact us at dublin@pubhd.org!
