Cultural Norms from an African Perspective
Likely: a Guest presenter evening In Africa, actions speak louder than words, especially if there is a barrier between languages. In an effort to contextualize and be mindful of a complex mindset and worldview, we discuss many topics to be mindful of: 1. greetings 2. respect to elders 3. pointing finger 4. eating with spoon, fork, right hand 5. kissing and hugs 6. the notion of time 7. speaking and volume (loud) 8. personal space 9. receiving gifts with both hands 10...... whole lot more.

What we're about

Do you value critical thinking and reasoning to explain things?

"Durban Critical Thinkers is a predominantly secular, social group which meets regularly to engage in rational discussions which promote intellectual honesty."

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe. It is the opposite of faith/ belief in belief/ magical thinking/ and importantly "logical fallacies" such as "appeal to authority", "begging the question", "argument from ignorance" and more.

Critical thinking is also an attribute worth developing. It appeals to logic, evidence, reason, clarity, admitting ignorance-doubt- or when we simply don't know or know enough. It should lead to a willingness to want to know more, welcome correction, form informed views, improve arguments, language, creativity, self reflection, understand science and, - in short: learn, unlearn and relearn.

We welcome anyone open to have their views shared in respectful, honest and polite engagement. (This includes: secularists, humanists, atheists, agnostics, sceptics, freethinkers, questioning/ open minds, willing religious participants accepting of the group's secular ethos.)

Our discussions have a format and we try to be fair in our moderation.

Feel free to join our meetup discussions on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. (See scheduled meetups for more details.)
