What we're about

Sawubona! This is a Zulu greeting that means 'We See You,' that has a deeper meaning as well: "an invitation to a deep witnessing and presence. This greeting forms an agreement to affirm and investigate the mutual potential and obligation that is present in a given moment." - Orland Bishop

Welcome! This is a group for people of color to engage in meditation for the purpose of self renewal, clearing and ancestral healing of race-based trauma. The microaggressions that we as black and brown people encounter on a daily basis pile up after a while, resulting in energy blockages, difficulty concentrating, and other emotional injury, now acknowledged by the medical industry as Race Based Trauma. The macro agression, murder and continuous injustices against our men and women and its casual treatment in the media hurts us, and creates internal sorrow and suffering.

This group was formed to gather those with like minds to begin the healing process. Using basic mindfulness practice and ancestral reverance, we can transform this sorrow into energy that heals, uplifts, and supports us on our journey. Even if you are new to meditation, you will find this practice relaxing, healing, and supportive.

It is especially important to have access to a community of care, a safe space to be seen, REALLY seen, and to be heard, and to heal. The intention of this group is to be that community of care.

Sawubona!

Community Conversation and Open Forum on Race - Open to All

Trinity Avenue Presbyterian

New location! Trinity Church in downtown Durham! Please being a can of food for their food pantry, that's the cost of using the space :) The Durham People of Color Meditation meetup will be hosting bi-monthly open community conversations on race. We have received many requests from our friends and allies in the white community that are interested in the People of Color Meditation Meetup for Healing Race Based Trauma, and we wanted to create space for community and dialogue with these open hearts. Our circle forms at 7pm sharp with a few minutes of meditation instruction, followed by a short, 5 minute guided meditation. Sitting in circle we will open the space for open, supportive, mindful and 100% confidential discussion of race equity, white privilege, and bridging the racial divide. Another 5 minute guided meditation, and then we sit in 10 minutes of silence to integrate and anchor the healing process, and we will end at 8:30pm. Please arrive by 6:45 to say hi to everyone, sign in, remove your shoes, and get centered. If you arrive after 7pm please knock softly, and when you are let in, enter silently, have a seat and close your eyes. We look forward to being in circle with you. Thank you for saying yes to this very important work and much needed dialogue!
