Seeking Ruby/Rails Freelancer for 4-week CodeJam to wrap BPM App before 2010

Energetic startup working with industry-leading architects and coders at night and on weekends is now looking to bring on a freelance contractor for approximately 4 weeks of focused, full-time power-coding to wrap up key features of a business process management application.

We like our code lean, clean and smart. Our motto for our customer experience is capability without complexity – at affordable prices. You’ll be working on a full-featured application designed to allow small and large organizations in a niche market to have a BPM application built for their industry and their specific needs. Help us complete our application in time to help our client organizations get off to a good start in the new year.

Some of the areas still in development include:
• Project-based tasks and account-based task templates,
• A commenting “engine”, account-based object tagging, document version tracking and intra-account communication tools
• Wizard-based (question/answer style) multi-step tools for structure content publishing, metrics creation and custom report builder.
• Administrative dashboards with “stoplight” indicators of status and problem areas on projects and structured process path.

We are located in the Los Angeles area, local is great, but we’re built to operate remotely. You’ll be coordinating with our current engineers, but should have the skills and experience building new apps to be able to solve complex challenges quickly and with smart solutions. While we’re looking for good game, we’re not unrealistic. Amazing things have been accomplished at night and on weekends, the right addition to our group will help us bring it on home with style.

Professional level capabilities in RoR. Haml, Sass, MySQL, Scriptaculous, and Prototype should all be well-worn tools in your arsenal. And understanding of the array of Amazon Web Services and cloud architecture is helpful.

If interested, email me at, include your resume, your website(s) and/or tell us what GitHub repositories to follow. We’re ready if you are.

Re: Developer position for California Childhood Leukemia Study

We have a number of solid developer candidates that we're considering but few have any significant RoR experience. As a result while we review our existing candidates, we're considering the option of contracting for a fixed-term (possibly a year) with a highly skilled RoR developer.

That developer would assist me in laying the groundwork for long-term RoR development (infrastructure setup, source code control implementation, establish documentation and testing standards and practices, etc.) and would then work with me to build core systems to serve both operational and research needs.

If you are a very skilled RoR developer with a portfolio of work and great references, we'd like to talk to you about whether you may be interested in working with us full-time for a year or so or part-time for a somewhat longer term (exact durations to be determined in discussions with candidates).

If so, contact me at Magee at Berkeley (.edu). Please send a CV, URLs for examples of your work and a cover message outlining what kind of work terms you are seeking (full-time, part-time, etc.).

Thanks so much everyone, and Happy Holidays!

Booming start-up seeks talented and dedicated RoR engineers

About the firm:

ekoVenture has created an OpenTable-like platform for travel experiences and day activities. Think sailing, trekking, kayaking, safari, cycling, wine tasting, culinary trips, cultural trips, voluntourism, eco travel, and more. Already, more than 450 tour suppliers use this platform and have entered 10,000 trips that serve over 160 countries, all which are live to travelers via Trips are available directly to consumers via or through distribution partners. v2.0 of ekoVenture is taking our already robust trip platform and adding a layer of innovative social features (which cannot be discussed here).

Our mission is to take the cool travel experiences that are available, and make them accessible to the average traveler. Right now, more than $30 billion is being transacted on trips in our market and we will grow this number by providing greater access to reputable tour suppliers around the world.

Our company is well funded by reputable venture groups, superstar angels, and the world’s most famous and successful entrepreneurs (familiar names).

Although a lot of companies talk about agile software development, we actually implement it (hard-core agile and extreme programming), with pair programming, test-driven development, aggressive refactoring, weekly releases, etc. Whether you already have first-hand experience with agile or are interested in learning agile through our immersive agile boot camp, then ekoVenture is certainly for you!

We practice lean start-up methodologies and our team members are smart, enthusiastic, creative, and obsessed with making a start-up company into a household name! This will involve a lot of effort and focus – but thankfully there is delicious late-night Vietnamese food right across the street from our hip offices in Jackson Square. We are making it happen and need incredible engineers to join our already talented team.

About you:
• Well versed in RoR with a minimum of one year experience
• Self-motivated and takes initiative
• Loves a place where he/she can make an impact
• Extraordinary communication skills
• Innovative & creative
• Up on the latest trends & plug ins
• Enjoys regular tech networking and staying informed

As a Ruby on Rails developer, you will do the following:
• Work with product managers, UI designers, QA engineers and other developers to design, implement, document, and test multi-tiered, web-based applications
• Work on all layers of our web application, from front-end CSS and server side coding to database development
• Troubleshoot and resolve complicated and business-critical technical issues related to function, performance and security
• Integrate with third-party web services and data sources
• Implement automated tests
• Build tools to automate repetitive tasks

• BS/CS or equivalent experience
• Experience engineering for high-volume, transaction-oriented, consumer-facing web sites
• Rails 2, MySQL 5, CSS, MacOS X, and Linux or OpenSolaris (preferred)
• JavaScript
• Git
• Experience with testing frameworks from rspec and Cucumber to Selenium and JsUnit

We offer:
• Great compensation negotiable based upon experience
• Full benefits, two weeks paid time off, and 401K
• Attractive employee stock option plan (we want you to share in our success)

Cool perks, such as:
• Company iPhones, mobile service, and 3G Internet connection on laptop
• Required sabbatical time (in addition to paid time off)
• Free vacations anywhere in the world through our suppliers’ complementary employee programs
• Discounted/reimbursed health club memberships at the city’s best facilities
• Regular company-sponsored local outings such as climbing, sailing, hiking and more

VonChurch is an independent recruiting firm that specializes in the video game industry. Our clients are a who's who list of studios ranging from the biggest AAA giants to the A/B-stage up-and-comers. I personally focus on recruiting for social games; and one thing I've noticed is that many ruby on rails developers love games but gravitate towards web development. Very few people realize that social games can be seen as an expansion of the web 2.0 sensation. Unlike their console/PC game counterparts, many social game studios are accepting RoR developers WITHOUT game experience. Developers I speak with are often looking to test their programming abilities as well as apply their RoR backgrounds into new endeavors. So my question to many regarding game development is simply, "why not?"

I'm currently representing many bay area social game studios whose founders range from ex AAA veterans to former web 2.0 gurus to recent grads from Stanford, MIT, Cal, CMU, etc. In short, we recruit for the quintessential silicon valley start ups! If you are interested in pursuing game development opportunities, don't be afraid to let me know-

WebGreek is looking for a talented Ruby guru to build our Facebook application. All our api calls are complete and we've been told by East Agile that the project would take 5-8 weeks, depending on talent. We've spec'd the entire project and would prefer to use pivotaltracker if possible.

Compensation is by project, not hour, and is very competitive. If the quality of the work fits our taste, we'll be offering a P/T - F/T job of a lifetime. 5th spot on an excellent team of 4.

We're funded, but we're not going for VC money. We're already monetized, and will hit profitability this coming quarter. This is a killer opp for the right developer.

Clixtr is looking for a Software Engineer to become a key member of our team

Clixtr Inc. is a venture backed startup based in San Francisco. Our vision is to turn smartphones into smartcameras by leveraging location based technologies and the rapidly improving quality of camera phones. Using the Clixtr iPhone app or website, our users create events, upload mobile photos, and create real-time event photo streams to share with users around them. Photos and events are public and can be followed live on the web or directly on mobile devices.
We received seed funding from DFJ and launched our first product in September (iPhone App) at TechCrunch 50. Since then, we have launched our web product and have continued to improve our core technology. We have received industry recognition by winning several accolades. Locally, we were presented with an Emerging Technology award from the San Jose Business Journal, and nationally, we were recognized as the Winner of the Mobile Apps Showdown at the 2010 Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

We are a small and passionate team of five. Our office is located in San Francisco's Financial District. We are followers of the lean startup philiosophy, and practice Agile Development. We are interested in meeting with people with expertise in Rails development and restful APIs to support mobile and web front-ends. This is a full-time position for a complete rockstar and includes compensation in the form of salary and equity.

About You

You are a super talented, self motivated engineer who is ready to join a fast growing startup. You are experienced in a wide variety of development environments. You have the skills necessary to work in a Rails Environment in support of a restful API consumed by web and mobile platforms. You have had the opportunity to apply your talent to real- world projects (perhaps for a larger company) and are ready for the unique opportunity that only a Silicon Valley startup can provide. You have the desire to be a part of a team where you can quickly become a key player and can help drive a product forward. You are excited by the prospect of using agile methods in the real world. Like us, you live for this stuff.

Next Steps

Send us an email (as well as a resume, link to a portfolio, blog, Stack Overflow profile, or whatever else might impress us), and we will respond with a questionnaire that will cover the standard generic interview questions. If it seems like there may be a good fit, we'll invite you out for Coffee, and get to know you a bit, talk about your technical qualifications, and if we both feel good about working together, invite you to interview with the rest of our team.
