Cairo at a Glance
Known to its nearly 20 million residents as "Um Ad-Dunya" (Mother of the World), Cairo is the second largest city in Africa and the largest of the Arab world. You’ll get sucked into an ancient, bygone medieval era while at the same time be hypnotized by the charm of the vibrating metropolis that is Cairo. Part of the allure is simply participating in the life of the capital as it whirls past, just like it has for centuries. Perhaps no other people in the world say "Welcome" so often - and mean it so genuinely. Come and be welcomed into the life of Egypt!
Itinerary
Day 1 - Friday, Dec. 9th - Exploring Cairo; Mother of the World Tour
From the airport we will commence our city tour of the incredible Cairo. We will visit Medieval Cairo, which dates back to the 10th century, home to the most significant Islamic monuments in the city. After taking in the amazing history, we will end our day in Khan el-Khalil Market. Though it is easy to dimiss as a tourist trap, the market has been thriving since the 14th century and is a mainstay in the culture of Cairo. It is the first choice for thousands of locals to do business and provides an insightful glimpse into Cairo's everyday life.
In the evening, we will sample some of the city's local fare. Everyone will be invited to join us on a cruise down the Nile as we take in the longest river of the world! Its water sources are shared by eleven countries; we will see the northern section flowing through the Sudanese desert and then into Egypt. Egyptian civilizations and Sudanese kingdoms have relied on this part of the river since ancient times.
Day 2 - Saturday, Dec. 10th - Pyramids, Pharaohs & All Things Ancient!
Our second day is dedicated to everything ancient! Egypt brings out the explorer in everyone - we'll start by discovering the great Pyramids of Giza; one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. As of 2008, there have been 138 pyramids found in the country; most built as tombs for the pharoah's during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. The most famous are those found in Giza (the outskirts of Cairo). They are some of the largest structures ever built. Moreover, the Pyramid of Khufu is the biggest Egyptian pyramid and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Anicent world that still exists.
After enjoying lunch, we will explore the glittering finds housed in Egyptian Museum of Ancient Antiquities; home to over 120,000 pieces of history! We will continue on a felucca for sunset; a traditional wooden sailing boat used particularly along the Nile in Egypt and in Iraq.
Day 3 - Sunday, Dec. 11th: Coptic Cairo / Free Time & Departure Day
Coptic Cairo is part of Old Cairo and encompasses many historical sites. In this tour we will take in the two most significant churches in Cairo, as well as Bein Izra Synagogue. You will have some free time to do last minute shopping at Khan Al Khalil, live a photographer's dream, or simply sip a hot tea and take in a traditional sheesha whilst watching Cairo pass by! Everyone will be transferred to the airport in time for their return flights.
