WordPress Has Not Been Cancelled

Details

The entire planet is moving everything online, so this should be a great time to be a web professional...Shouldn't it?

After all, many of us already work remotely and are familiar with tools like Zoom and Slack. And many organizations are investing heavily in their websites as they pivot to e-commerce or online learning.

For some of us, business is booming and the biggest challenge is keeping up with demand while still finding time to engage in the excruciatingly slow process of ordering groceries online. That's its own kind of stress. So much is at stake for our clients that it's easy to overwork and collapse.

For others in the WordPress community, the problem isn't working from home: it's trying to work at home when everyone else is home, too. Partners, children, grandchildren: no matter how much you love them, having them underfoot, restless, and anxious makes it hard to concentrate--and that's when everyone is healthy!

Some of us have seen expected income vanish. When your clients have had to close down their offices or storefronts and lay off employees because they have no way to do business now, their budget (and need) for marketing of all kinds disappears.

Let's get together on Sunday to figure out how to have a virtual meetup and offer each other a little support. I'd like to check in with everyone and find out

  • How are you doing/feeling/coping? All responses are acceptable.
  • What's been hardest?
  • Have there been any silver linings?
  • Have you done anything fun or interesting?
  • How have your clients been affected?
  • What do they need to make it through?
  • How have you been able to help them?
  • What do you need to make it through?
  • What do you need that we might be able to help with?
  • What has been most helpful for you?
  • Do you have any tips for the group?

No one will be forced to share who doesn't want to, but WordPress meetups are meant to be a safe and inclusive place. Ironically, that means adding some extra layers of restrictions to the Zoom meeting to ensure that our our meeting doesn't get hijacked. After you RSVP, you'll receive a link to register on Zoom, and when you do THAT, you'll get the meeting link and password.

I will ruthlessly remove anyone who engages in hostile or hateful behavior, but disruptions from pets are welcome.
