  • The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model

Hallo Edtech Meetup Members. Our second Meetup for the year will take place on Tuesday the 1st of March. Our presenter will be Kevin Sherman, an educational consultant specializing in innovative teaching strategies. Please join us for an interesting presentation and we hope a lively discussion. The topic for the presentation will be; SAMR: A Model for Successful eLearning Strategies. SAMR provides a model that informs the redesign of teaching practices, and connects modes of utilization of technology with progressively greater impact upon learner performance; recent research has confirmed the outcomes predicted by the model. The presentation will review the model with an eye to its use in practical teaching and learning scenarios, focusing on concrete examples across a range of disciplines. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions related to projects in their own schools and organisations, so that they may be analyzed and discussed. From 1985 until 2001, Kevin taught secondary English and History, and also served as Head of Department and Curriculum Advisor. Since 1990, he has trained teachers to use technology in teaching, learning, and school management. From late 2009, Kevin served as the ICT-Integration Education Specialist at UCT’s Schools Development Unit, and then as Head of Curriculum and Learning at Parklands College. Kevin holds two degrees from Stanford University: a B.A. in History and Psychology, and a Masters in Education. In 2013, he earned the distinction of becoming a Google Certified Innovator, and is a Google Certified Education Trainer. Kevin is now Director of Professional Development for CloudEd Solutions.

  • You are invited to our EdTech Meetup

    Location visible to members

Welcome to the first EdTech Stellenbosch Meetup for 2016. Our speakers will be Martin Butler and Gerjo Ben van der Merwe. Martin and Gerjo are the organizers behind the Digital Transformation of Education Conference (dtoe.co.za) that will be held in April. The questions, problems, ideas and passions that inspired them to organise the conference will be discussed. Most of you that are interested in Education and Technology will recognise that we often wonder and debate about the How? of digital innovation in the classroom. In such a layered society with so many variables in terms of learners, teachers, schools, access to software and hardware how do we find a workable and meaningful way to align and integrate the two? Come and hear their thoughts. Gerjo Ben is a passionate parent. Martin Butler is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) and a Research Associate at the Institute for Future Studies. He holds an Electronic Engineering degree from the University of Pretoria, an MBA from the USB and is studying towards a PhD. Martin joined academia in 2007, after a 15 year career in the ICT industry. Martin was the project leader and is the current manager for the USB's Postgraduate Diploma (Business Management & Administration) that uses pioneering virtual classroom concept to simultaneously reach students in the classroom, on the internet and on their mobile phones, a University of Stellenbosch first. He serves in an advisory capacity on the effective use of ICT usage to many local schools.

  • Important Event Update: EdTech partnering with Partners for Possibility

EdTech Stellenbosch in partnership with Louise van Rhyn are inviting you to the launch of the book Partners for Possibility: How business leaders and principals are igniting radical change in South African schools. All stakeholders involved in the education sector know very well that in order for us to improve the quality of our education, we require new thinking, new approaches, new technology and most importantly, committed citizens that are willing to collaborate and make this a reality. It is a mammoth of a battle that cannot be fought alone! It is in this spirit of collaboration and a joint vision for renewal in education, that we're postponing the upcoming EdTech with Arthur Preston and instead invite all Eduvators and education enthusiasts to join the Stellenbosch launch of the book about Partners for Possibility with Professor Brian O'Conell and Conrad Sidego on the 19th of March 2015. Partners for Possiblity (PfP) is the flagship of Symphonia for South Africa (SSA) with a bold and audacious vision: To provide quality education for all children in South Africa by 2022. Partnering business leaders with school principals, their mission is to lead change in schools and bring innovative solutions to help solve South Africa's education crises. If you would like to attend, we kindly ask that you please confirm your attendance with Melissa ([masked]). Follow Partners for Possibility on twitter @PfP4SA or have a look at their website (http://www.pfp4sa.org) to find out more on how they empower principals to become change leaders in schools and communities. We look forward seeing you and be sure to look out for details on Arthur Preston's EdTech Meetup early in April.
