What we're about

We share a deep and thoughtful interest in discussing the impact and future of the quickly advancing world. What are the possible applications of uniquely progressive social and political structures? This group is open to everyone, so please come along and bring a friend.

If you are unable to attend any meeting of interest, we try to record all of our speakers and make this available on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Sq5reUuDgRB8oWPnYOt3A

Our aim at the Edinburgh Futurists is to develop a unique local identity in time, but for now will be loosely based on the successful models of the recently started Manchester Futurists and long-running London Futurists meetups. Examples of talks coming soon may include:

- AI & the Future of Business

- The Technological Singularity

- The Future of Politics

- Universal Basic Income

- Existential Risks Threatening the Future of Humanity

- Progressive Economic Reformation Systems

- Ethical Considerations of Artificial Intelligence

- The Future of Charitable Giving

- Living in Sustainable Cities

We are interested in any and many aspects and perspectives on what the future will hold. From Transhumanism to uniquely futuristic economic models and back again. In order to facilitate discussing these topics, we will begin this group with a series of monthly speakers preceded and followed by casual discussion on the topic.

January Book Club - Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes

Online event

**DESCRIPTION**

The story of a mentally disabled man whose experimental quest for intelligence mirrors that of Algernon, an extraordinary lab mouse.

In diary entries, Charlie tells how a brain operation increases his IQ and changes his life. As the experimental procedure takes effect, Charlie's intelligence expands until it surpasses that of the doctors who engineered his metamorphosis.

The experiment seems to be a scientific breakthrough of paramount importance until Algernon begins his sudden, unexpected deterioration. Will the same happen to Charlie?

February Book Club - The Food of the Gods by H.G. Wells

Online event

**DESCRIPTION**

What happens when science tampers with nature? A riveting, cautionary tale with disastrous results reveals the chilling answer.

Hoping to create a new growth agent for food with beneficial uses to mankind, two scientists find that the spread of the material is uncontrollable. Giant chickens, rats, and insects run amok, and children given the food stuffs experience incredible growth and serious illnesses.

Over the years, people who have eaten these specially treated foods find themselves unable to fit into a society where ignorance and hypocrisy rule. These "giants," with their extraordinary mental powers, find themselves shut away from an older, more traditional society. Intolerance and hatred increase as the line of distinction between ordinary people and giants is drawn across communities and families.

One of H. G. Wells' lesser-known works, The Food of the Gods has been retold many times in many forms since it was first published in 1904. The gripping, newly relevant tale combines fast-paced entertainment with social commentary as it considers the ethics involved in genetic engineering.
