What we're about

Hello film fans!

This is a group for those who enjoy the silver screen - now OK, I know there are already plenty of those on Meetup, so our focus is predominantly on classics (by which I mean films at least twenty years old) rather than whatever is currently in your local picture house. That's not to say that we don't cover recent and current films of course, just not so much. We try to encompass a range of genres and countries throughout the history of cinema, and we're definitely not shy to put on a bit of cheese now and then.

The crux of the group is the fortnightly discussion session (every other Thursday), where we meet at a pub to discuss a particular film - just like a book group, hence the title. For these events you'll need to get hold of and watch the film yourself, but feel free to ask other members for help sourcing a copy if needs be.

We also hold regular free screenings (twice a month), occasional cinema trips (with discussion afterwards where possible), and tackle the notoriously difficult Filmhouse quiz (on the second Sunday of the month).

These events are also the best way to put forward your suggestions for future films, so be sure to come along and speak up - I'm always impressed at how the most unlikely suggestions can generate the best discussion. I'm always keen on feedback from attendees and always on the lookout for event organisers too, so don't be shy.

Finally, please bear in mind that the key focus of the group is to meet like-minded people and have fun, not to have weighty academic or critical discussion - I'd much rather get a few people together and chat honestly about what they liked or didn't like about the film we watched, without getting too deep and too dry. All views, thoughts and opinions are welcome as they get the discussion (and occasionally debate!) going, and your views are just as valid as anyone else's. No judgement or putting others down please, this isn't a group for people who just want to make themselves look clever as it gets old very quickly, puts people off and really sucks the joy out of it (that said, try having a light-hearted discussion about the work of Ingmar Bergman and see how far we get).

Hope to see you soon
Darren
