New Meetup: Birkebeiner - Cold-Viking Fun!

A former member
Announcing a new Meetup for The Edmonton Hiking/Walking Meetup Group!

What: Birkebeiner - Cold-Viking Fun!

When: February 14, 2009 7:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Meetup Description: It was the year 1206... civil war raged in Norway. An infant prince and heir to the throne, Haakon Haakonsson, was in danger and in hiding near Lillehammer. Two brave Birkebeiner warriors rescued the prince, carrying him on ski from the Gudbrandsdal valley over two mountain ranges to Rena in the Osterdal valley. The young prince was later crowned King of Norway and the civil war ended.

Edmonton is home to one of only three premier Cross Country Ski events in the world that remembers that winter race 800 years ago (the other two are in Norway and the US).

This is a volunteer opportunity to remember the brave Norwegian skiers while braving the cold yourself!

Here is the plan:

We meet in Sherwood Park and car pool to Elk Island. From their, Park Rangers escort us to our station. Plan to walk the few metres into Meadow Cabin - carrying stoves, supplies and other kit. We'll spend the next hour or so setting up the cabin to heat up the Gatorade (yummmy), prepare some grub for the skiers (cheese, cookies and like) and decorate our little cabin.

That is right, decorate! We bring a little bit of Norway to Alberta with horned hats and long braids (pillaging is strictly frowned upon). After feeding a goodly number of grateful skiers, we clean up and go home.

This is a great volunteer opportunity to ski some world class skiers first up, have some fun and get some great SWAG including a t-shirt and a party later in the month.

Note that we will be out in the cold the entire day. As a result, it is imperative that you have warm clothing, good boots, bring fluids and lunch. There is a cabin with a wood burning stove but you should plan to be outside except for the occassional warm up break.

If this sounds like good Viking Fun to you, sign up here and I will contact you via email with a few other details that you need to know.
