About us
The YEG WP Meetup (wpyeg.org) is a local group of WordPress users in the Edmonton metro area who gather monthly to share our interests, curiosity, questions, and learning.** We’re makers, creators, developers, designers, writers, editors, publishers, marketing consultants, agency owners, freelancers, hobbyists, and enthusiasts who use WordPress to get things done on the open web. All WordPress Meetups are open to anyone and everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability.
If you’d like to network or talk shop, we’re also on LinkedIn, Dev Edmonton Society (DES) (Slack), and Edmonton Startup Community (Slack).
Connect with the WordPress Community in Canada 🇨🇦 at WordCamp Canada (annual conference), WordPress Canada Slack, or the WordPress Canada Facebook Group. Put yourself on the map at thewp.world.
There are almost 20 active WordPress Meetups across Canada on [Meetup.com](https://www.meetup.com/topics/wordpress/ca/). In Alberta, there’s us and Calgary (YYC WP Meetup). Find other Canadian WordPress Meetups.
You can join the global teams that build and maintain WordPress, as an open-source software project and community, by creating an account at make.wordpress.org and wordpress.slack.com. There’s also a global Zoom (online-only) meetup for learning WordPress. Check out the Learn WordPress Online Workshops.
Global Community Sponsors help fund local WordPress Meetup groups and WordCamps worldwide. Our Local Community Sponsors support our monthly operational costs. Thanks to Multidots for their support.

Build a Block Theme in WordPress
Edmonton Unlimited, 10107 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB T5J 1W8, Edmonton, AB, CAWe're going to work through some of Birgit Pauli-Haack's block theme development workshop from WordCamp Asia 2026. (Slides) Birgit has shared her work at The Gutenberg Times and bundled related resources on GitHub. There’s even a blueprint you can import into Studio or WordPress Playground — both are built with WebAssembly (Wasm). With Playground, you can instantly run and build things in WordPress entirely within your browser. This is a good project for beginners and seasoned developers alike.
We're not focusing on using AI tools for this project, but you sure can use 'em if you've got 'em! Jonathan Bossenger has a nice walkthrough for one of the ways you can build block themes with an LLM, by using WordPress.com MCP tools and Claude.
Please bring a laptop; this is a hands-on workshop.
