Lunch and Learn: Defining What it Means to Increase Educational Opportunity
Most of us who work in education are passionate about ensuring that each and every student is prepared for success in college, career, and life. Unfortunately, the current education system does not create the same opportunities for all students. This lunch and learn will focus on reviewing a set of factors that have demonstrated evidence for increasing educational opportunities, particularly for historically disadvantaged students. We will then show how these factors, in combination with more traditional considerations for grant making and investments, can be combined into a scorecard that can be used as a transparent, decision-making framework for allocating funds. We will close with thoughts on the terms "achievement gap," "opportunity gap," and "equity" and how language itself plays a role in our ability to make progress. Vinny Badolato is an Education Impact Investor at Voqal and leads the Education Opportunity Project, which aims to address the educational disparity and inequity that exists across racial and class lines and is one of the root causes of rising economic inequality. He is a policy wonk, political junkie, and problems solver - working to advance opportunity and make the world a better place. Vinny will use the scorecard in his work. June Marcel is the Founder of Gluona, a consulting firm that enables the transformation of education by providing capacity. June has more than 18 years of experience, spanning nearly every functional business management role and thrives on helping organizations create transparency and action from ambiguity. June lead the development of the scorecard. This is a brown bag lunch, so please feel free to bring something to eat during the discussion.
