Reading and discussion group Effective Altruism

(these meetups will be held in English when non-Dutch speaking participants are attending)

In addition to our informal monthly Effective Altruism meetups we will hold reading and discussion meetings every two months. During these meetings we will read and discuss articles or books that are about Effective Altruism or topics that are related to it. Effective Altruism consists in the honest and impartial attempt to find out how to do the most amount of good with our available time and resources by applying rational reasoning, data and scientific evidence. Effective Altruism covers alot of different themes and domains that concern effectively helping others, be it in the short-term or the longer run. If you want to delph deeper into the question on doing good better, you're more than welcome to join these twomonthly meetings.

Last meeting we had a conversation about cause prioritization and asked ourselves what are the most pressing problems in the world, and how to solve them as effectively as we can. In addition we also discussed existential risks, i.e., threats posed to our civilization and existence.
During the upcoming we will delve deeper into the latter, and discuss the case for reducing extinction. According to 80.000 hours we probably live in the most dangerous time ever. Fortunately, our capacity for solving problems has also increased. Come to this evening to talk about how to increase our chance of survival.

Parallel aan de informele maandelijkse Effectief Altruïsme bijeenkomsten zullen we tweemaandelijks lees- en discussiebijeenkomsten houden. Gedurende deze bijeenkomsten zullen we artikelen of boeken lezen die betrekking hebben op Effectief Altruïsme, of daaraan gerelateerde thema's. Effectief Altruïsme draait om de vraag hoe we beter goed kunnen doen. In de poging daar een antwoord op te geven maken Effectief Altruïsten gebruik van rationaliteit en wetenschappelijk bewijs om te achterhalen hoe we een zo groot mogelijke, positieve sociale impact kunnen hebben met de ons beschikbare tijd en middelen. Effectief Altruïsme is inmiddels een overkoepelend woordenpaar geworden voor veel verschillende thema's en domeinen die draaien om het effectief helpen van anderen, zowel op de korte, middellange, als lange termijn.
