Compassionate Cities and Communities
You are invited to join the EmpaTech event focused on Compassionate Cities and Communities and how to incorporate the social dimension into urban design and planning. Designing a place with a positive social purpose in mind it’s the ultimate goal since studies are showing that if social and community cohesion is strong, people’s health, well-being and daily quality of life can improve. Social relationships and networks play a crucial role in the way communities succeed overpassing everyday struggles and how they cope in crisis situations. In the same time, we want to talk about how technology can help straighten the social dimension of communities and cities at the strategy and implementation levels. Our speakers come with experience from around the world and different perspectives: Alejandra Rivera - Erasmus Mundus 4CITIES Master student in Urban Studies (’19), she has a background in International Relations and Economics and has worked with various international development projects in the U.S. and Latin America. Her ongoing master thesis is in social innovation focusing on educational capacity building initiatives aimed towards social inclusion: cases are Medellin and Malmö. She is intrigued by the potential of social and technical intersections in community development, and advocates for people-centered urbanism to create ‘Compassionate cities’. Derek Ruez is a postdoctoral researcher in the Space and Political Agency Research Group at the University of Tampere. He recently earned a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Kentucky, and works at the intersections of critical human geography, political theory, and urban studies. He is currently conducting a new research project funded by the Academy of Finland that examines the possibilities and limits of compassion in urban governance, planning, and politics. What we're about

    Here’s some news for you.

In the Oresund area, there is a new community starting up with events hosted in Malmo. We want to create a network with passionate and driven individuals like me and you, with various backgrounds, be it in the IT industry, social sciences and arts. We have engaging topics to discuss and to bring up with respect to our society. We will focus on empathy and compassion which, we think, should play a pivotal role in human communities. We will walk this path together trying to understand if our modern world can still harbor and maybe even boost human empathy through advancement in science and technology.

We want to build a BIG team, to debate and work together to contribute to society well-being.
