What we're about

The Empathy & Connection group hosts events in which participants have the opportunity to increase self awareness, develop communication skills, feel more connected and alive, and make friendships through interpersonal relating practices. The events are focused on developing mindful and embodied awareness of our feelings and the impact we have on each other as we share about our feelings. We do this through practicing empathetic listening (such as in Non-violent Communication - NVC), and authentically relating to one another - revealing our present moment awareness and feelings. Some of the events are themed, such as the series on "Grief, Loss and Heartbreak" or "Self-Empathy - a study and practice group." The intention of the group is to feel supported and less alone as we navigate this difficult world.

Most of the events have 5-20 people (rsvp's on Meetup don't reflect actual group size). I live in Portland and have a goal of growing a community of people to grow and connect with at events locally after Covid. There are also people from other locations already attending the events - people who wish to join us from other locations are welcome.

We have a Social/Spoken Meditation 7 mornings a week from 7-7:45am Pacific. If you are interested in joining that, please send me a message.

About participating:

The groups are intended to be a safe space in which to share vulnerable feelings. Participants are expected to honor the dignity of others in the group, speaking for their own experience without trying to fix or give advice to others. Participants should have some experience with group dynamics and enough self-awareness to share space and attention with others, and have care for their impact on others in the group. We each bring our own communication strengths to the group and will also learn about our blind spots and areas for growth.

Participants should know their own boundaries and be able to self-regulate when strong emotions arise. The groups are peer-led and there is no professional therapeutic support. The events are led by regularly attending participants who have experience facilitating authentic relating groups and are dedicated to holding a space of care, empathy and shared learning. We are not leading as professional coaches, therapists or educators.

A financial contribution is requested to attend some of the events to honor the commitment the hosts make to planning the events and holding the space for others to practice being authentically present with one another.

I hope you'll join us!
