Cambridge Search Meetup - Ontologies & Elasticsearch

Details

We're back in 2014 with a new series of talks on all aspects of search and related themes.

First up is Zoe Rose (https://twitter.com/z_rose), an information architect and content designer. Zoe is interested in categories, descriptions, and metadata. She prefers to work in the messy space between natural and formal language. Zoe works at gov.uk (http://gov.uk/). She has also worked at the BBC, Pearson, and Cambridge University Press.
Zoe says "Have you ever played 'six degrees of Kevin Bacon'? If the answer is 'yes', you've already created an ontology. This talk will explain what ontologies are and what they're for. It features marine invertebrates, Japanese emperors, and Kevin Bacon."

Our second talk will be from Jurgen Van Gael (https://twitter.com/jvangael) - Jurgen is the Data Science Director at a London based eCommerce startup called Rangespan (https://www.rangespan.com/). Before joining Rangespan he was an applied researcher at Microsoft Research. He says: "Rangespan is an eCommerce startup from London which is trying to help all retailers scale their product range to millions of products. A key tool for our retailer customers is a search engine which they can use to select products they want to launch. In my presentation I'll discuss how we use Elasticsearch (http://www.elasticsearch.org) at Rangespan and why we think it's a great technology."

Plus the usual networking and followed by live music downstairs! Do feel free to pass on details of the Meetup to colleagues and anyone else you think might be interested.
