Ethereum: Byzantium Release (Metropolis Part 1)

The first part of the long awaited Metropolis update is finally here. Byzantium, the next major update to the Ethereum protocol, is live on testnet and scheduled to go live on mainnet around October 16th. The second part (Constantinople) is expected for early 2018.

Byzantium comes with several new features which make contract development easier and adds some cryptographic primitives to enable the implementation of new privacy mechanisms. It will also delay the difficulty bomb which will allow ethereum to return to its normal block times.
