A Philosophy of Life
Details
In Ethical Culture, we often mention the founder of the first Ethical Society, Felix Adler. We don’t have to agree with all that Adler said and wrote, to recognize how his ideas influenced the direction of the Ethical Movement. When he outlined his “ethical philosophy of life” he was careful to label it “an ethical philosophy” and not “THE ethical philosophy.” That itself reflects one of his crucial founding ideas: the acceptance of diversity in belief.
And yet, even within our diversity, there are some core ideas that are common among us. Our Consulting Leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, will outline ten important ideas that Adler brought to the movement that still influence many in Ethical Societies today. And she’ll mention five of Adler’s ideas that we’ve largely left behind, in the dustbin of history.
