Abstract:

Encryption and the term "BYOK" have surged to the forefront of cloud service evaluations. Both security and compliance stakeholders express great interest in encryption and its apparent promises. However, the expectations built upon encryption and control of encryption keys are often founded on assumptions that fail under scrutiny. Let’s examine the top myths of cloud encryption (as published in trade journals and marketing materials), debate "facts", and share perceptions about this fascinating and evolving area of cloud services and data privacy. We can broaden the discussion to cover other aspects of access to customer data, the evolving realizations of the threat landscape when using cloud services, and innovation directions in cloud services that can enhance security in ways that are unlikely to ever be universally realized otherwise.

Paul regularly meets with CISOs and CIOs and their privacy, security and compliance teams to listen to customers’ concerns and bring that input into planning for Office 365. Paul’s current work is heavily focused on customer data protection through encryption and quorum-based administrative controls. Prior to Microsoft Paul worked in health care, insurance, financial services, and served in the United States Navy.
