The Exeter Mithraic Fellowship is a new and experimental project with the aim of promoting Good-Mindedness through a Mithraic cultural movement. By Good-Mindedness we mean that character of a human mind which tends to lead to taking actions that further the general flourishing of life.

We have adopted the idea of Mithraism as our a cultural identity. Modern Mithraism is what we make it but we can look back for inspiration to the Mithraic Fellowships of the Roman Empire and before then to the pagan and Zoroastrian traditions of Mithraism.

We think that modern people are suffering a crisis of direction. They lack the ability to make meaning out of the world, and consequently cannot engage properly with it. The result is a society and world out of proper control by humane and intelligent forces.

This crisis is blamed by some on the loss of religious belief and practice with the decline of Christianity. Many though are wary of religion especially that which appears dogmatic, irrational or puritanical.

Mithraism is being offered as a new start for those who see the need for a wisdom tradition and  a social movement for better connection to the world both in our understanding and values and in our more ethical actions.

What Mithraism is is still open to discover and we expect it will mean different things to different people. However our focus is on sparking the development of Good-Mindedness through acquaintance with some of the lesser-known wisdom traditions of the past which seem to fit in with our Mithraic theme. We also consider Community an important value and we will endeavour to make our events conducive to building social connection.

The Exeter Mithraic Fellowship is very much in its first stages and we are still feeling our way forward.  However in time we would like to see lots of different activities each month - some of them cultural and others purely social.
