What You'll Learn:
HOUR 1:
In the first hour, we'll cover the most often misused and misunderstood camera concepts that will have the most DRAMATIC impact on your photos:
• RAW vs. JPG vs. RAW + JPG – what’s the difference & advantages?
• What are the consequences of using my camera's built-in noise reduction feature?
• Why should I NEVER use built-in custom colour features like 'Sepia Tone'?
• What’s all the fuss re: HDR – High Dynamic Range?
• What are those numbers on the front of my lens... e.g., f=18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS?
• How can I quickly soften the light in flash pictures?
• How can I use AE-L Exposure Lock to change the way my camera behaves?
• Why change my metering modes – e.g., 'center-weighted', 'spot', etc?
• What do I gain by using interchangeable lenses?
• What is Exposure Bracketing and how can it avoid 'the one that got away'?
• What is White Balance & Custom WB for?
• What does the Histogram truly represent & mean, & why should it matter to me?
• What are some best practices for shooting high contrast scenes?
• How do the various Auto-Focus modes affect my picture taking ability?
• How do I know where my camera's focus point is?
• What is Resolution vs. Image Size vs. Image Quality, & how will it impact my prints?
• What would I gain by using a photo editing app such as Photoshop?
Hour 2 & 3:
In hour 2 & 3 we'll move on to a fun open Q&A for any and all your photography / camera control questions* - we'll try to answer them all on-the-spot, and share a few laughs in the process.
- note: we won't be covering too many questions on camera flash. Flash deserves a whole workshop to itself, so we won't get too deep into it in this workshop.
If you're not sure what questions to bring, that's fine - the first hour, plus the questions other group members bring will have you learning tonnes - even some things you've never thought to ask! You'll walk away a stronger, more intuitive photographer by the end of the afternoon.
What Our Last Attendees Said:
"Good meeting, laid back question and answer session." -Albert
"It was the perfect workshop follow-up. The first half offered a solid guided 'question/answer' session on technical camera controls and the second half of the session enabled us to ask any other questions we had that weren't addressed in the first half." - Marcia
"Very good mix of instruction and discussion, with learning being the 'aha' kind. This always helps me!" - Katherine
What To Bring:
Your camera, camera manual, a pen & paper, your willingness to share with the other group members.
And your sense of humour of course - we'll be having a lot of fun straightening things out. That's it!
